ANORECTAL MANOMETRY
What is an Anorectal Manometry?
Anorectal manometry is a test to evaluate the rectum and the anal canal. It is one of the tests used for the evaluation of constipation and fecal incontinence. This test measures the pressures of the anal sphincter muscles, the sensation in the rectum, and the neural reflexes that are needed for normal evacuation of bowel movements.
You will need to fast for at least two hours before the test and give yourself an enema.
It takes about 30 minutes. You will lie on your side while a small, flexible tube with a balloon attached is inserted into the rectum. The small balloon is inflated in the rectum to assess the normal reflex pathways.
